Safety Alert - March 19 2020: Important Updates; Schools Closed through April 24 (Updated 3/29)

These are important updates from Bulloch County Schools

Schools Closed at least through April 24
Governor Brian Kemp announced on Thursday, March 26, that all public schools must remain closed at least through April 24. Because national and state information about the coronavirus changes daily, we are unable to make decisions about when school will resume or if and when these days will be made up.

Free Breakfast & Lunch for Children (Updated to 49 sites)
Bulloch County Schools will continue to deliver bags of free meals to any children while we are closed. Meal service will continue through at least April 24, to 49  locations on weekdays (Monday – Friday). We are adding sites daily based on need, so check our website and social media for a current list of sites.

The program provides free grab and go breakfast and lunch meals to any child ages 0 to 18. No registration, sign-in, or identification is required, and the children do not have to be enrolled in one of our schools. It is not based on income. Any child is welcome to receive meals, even children who may be staying here temporarily with family. Children must be present to receive meals. Look for a Bulloch County Schools’ bus at each delivery location to receive meals.

    Digital & Print Resources
Due to school closures, it is our intent to provide resources that will keep children engaged and actively learning. We have digital resources and printed resource packets for grades K-8. High school teachers are emailing their students digital resources. High school students in need of printed packets should contact their school to make arrangements for packets to be sent to them or to pick up packets.  No teachers will make assignments that are required or for a grade.

See our digital resources newsletter here.

    Printed Resource Packets
While schools are closed we will place new printed resource packets each week in the following areas on Mondays and Tuesdays, by 9 a.m., beginning on March 23:

    • At the front door of each elementary school
    • At the front door of each middle school
    • At the front door of the Central Office on
    • At our free food sites on Mondays and Tuesdays during the designated feeding sites' times.

    Pre-Kindergarten Lottery Drawings
Our previously scheduled Pre-Kindergarten Lottery Drawings have been cancelled due to public health concerns with the coronavirus. Instead all drawings will be conducted on Thursday, March 26, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., at the district’s Central Office. The lotteries will not be open to the public. We will live stream them on our website and post a video archive there as well.

If you registered a child for pre-kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year, you will receive additional information prior to the lottery drawings, so please monitor the email and telephone you used for registration.

We appreciate your patience as we work to continue to serve all students.. We encourage you to make safe and healthy choices.

Safety Alert - Free meals for any children ages 0-18 during school closures (Updated 3/29)

Updated March 29, 2020 - Additional sites; Some times slightly different

Bulloch County Schools will deliver bags of free meals to 49 locations on weekdays (Monday – Friday) March 17 - April 24. The program will provide free grab and go breakfast and lunch meals to any child ages 0 to 18. No registration, sign-in, or identification is required, and the children do not have to be enrolled in one of our schools. It is not based on income. Any child is welcome, even children who may be staying here temporarily with family. Children must be present to receive meals. Look for a Bulloch County Schools’ bus at each delivery location to receive meals.

In the interest of public health and social distancing recommendations, the meals are for pick up only. No meals can be eaten at the sites. Families should also observe social distancing practices while waiting and receiving meals.

The meal delivery sites were selected based on input from the district’s school social workers, family engagement specialists, school nutrition personnel, and transportation personnel to serve areas with the most need.  Each meal sack will include food for breakfast and lunch. The funding for the program is made possible through the school district’s School Nutrition Department as part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs.

USDA guidelines prevent the school district from being able to provide evening meals or meals on weekends. There are multiple community organizations, including Bulloch Volunteer Organizations Mobilized in Disasters (VOAD) who are organizing efforts locally to further meet any food insecurity needs.

Bulloch County Schools and its School Nutrition Program do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, disability, age or gender.  For additional information about this remote feeding program, contact Bulloch County Schools.

An asterisk (*) denotes that the site's time was updated on March 29. Some times have been adjusted to accommodate additional sites or to shift deliveries to high-volume areas.

    Safety Alert-March 15, 2020 - Schools Closed for students & employees (Updated 3/19)

Updated March 19:  On March 19, Superintendent Charles Wilson announced that due to on-going social distancing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the school district would be closed through April 10.  April 6-10 is the school district's previously scheduled spring break.

Updated March 16:  On March 16, Governor Brian Kemp issued an executive order which mandated the closure of all public elementary, middle and high schools and post-secondary institutions through March 31. Bulloch County Schools had adjusted it's original closure time of March 15-March 27 to now be closed through March 31.

Original March 15, 2020 Safety Alert

This is an important message from Superintendent of Schools Charles Wilson.

After much consideration, we will close Bulloch County Schools for two weeks, from March 16 - March 27, for all students and employees. Any essential staff who needs to report will be notified by their supervisor. Our employee in-service day which was scheduled for tomorrow is also cancelled.

While we believe it is important to keep schools open for learning, we do not want to unnecessarily put our community at risk or create anxiety as our state and community face the uncertainty of the COVID-19 virus. We will make further decisions as more information is available.

Please check our social media and  district website, or our dedicated COVID-19 website for updated information about school closings and resources. We encourage everyone to take this time to limit your interactions with others, to take care of your loved ones, and to do our part to prevent the potential spread of COVID 19.
